LATERA implant

When the nasal cartilages lack the support to prevent collapse, the airway can become obstructed during deep nasal inspiration. This is called valve collapse, and is a very common and underestimated condition. Often people use nasal splints or breathe-easy tapes to overcome the effects of the collapse, but these are rarely a sustainable or efficient solution.

LATERA is an absorbable nasal implant placed in the nose through a key-hole incision which gives permanent support to the upper and lower lateral cartilages and tackles nasal obstruction. This can provide sustainable relief for valve collapse.

The procedure can be done through an incision performed under local anesthesia, and is a precise, safe and effective treatment with minimal downtime. The LATERA implant remains in the nose for approximately 18 months as the body absorbs it. In the meantime, a fibrous tissue forms around the implant providing a stable scar that adds long-term support to the collapsable cartilages.

This minimally invasive procedure can be considered to:

  • Overcome the limitations in nasal breathing during exercise or exertion
  • Impact the nasal flow positively with impact in snoring and overall quality of life
  • Address the nasal component of heavy snoring
  • Be complementary to a nose surgical procedure to achieve adequate patency of the nasal passages
  • Improve compliance with CPAP therapy to treat OSA
  • Tackle persistent nasal blockage that troubles sleep

Our clinics offer the LATERA implant as a sustainable solution to overcome collapsed nasal valves and impaired nasal breathing.
